My husband is a Coast Guardsman and is stationed at Coast Guard Training Center Cape May. The service's extremely rigorous, and only, enlisted basic training facility. I joined the spouses club two years ago to meet other ladies in the community but have developed a deep appreciation for the little known sacrifices made by the men and women of the Coast Guard both at home and abroad. They're always ready to answer the call for help whether they're patrolling the North Arabian Gulf or saving people in distress off our own shores.
Every year we donate stockings to new Coast Guard recruits in boot camp because they are not allowed to go home and see their families for the holidays. We give each recruit a stocking full of goodies and a hug from a caring mom to help them on their new journey to becoming servicemembers. We have had grown men cry and tell us how much this gesture meant to them.
The majority of these future Coast Guardsmen will be deployed around the world conducting dangerous frontline operations like counter drug, search and rescue, and fighting for our Nation's freedom in just a few short days after graduation. This is truly one of the first, and maybe last times, we can show our support for them before they are in harmsway. Such a feel good opportunity to support our Nation's newest troops.
