Does The Skin Care Products You use Cause Estrogen DOMINANCE? I was talking to a friend the other day and she told me ever since she started a certain skin care regimen that was not naturally based, she started having weird reactions. So, she started doing a little research and told me some of her symptoms coincided with "Estrogen Dominance" I thought this was interesting and I started doing a little research and I want to share with you what I found regarding skin care and how chemicals in skin care may cause "Estrogen Dominance."
Does The Skin Care Products You use Cause Estrogen DOMINANCE?
First, I will share with you a short break down on factors that cause aging of the skin. UV damage, Genetics, lifestyle and hormonal aging. When our body ages DNA repair and and cell regeneration decreases along with our supply of natural antioxidants resulting in moisture loss and dehydration. Our body also struggles with absorbing water from the air. Collagen is also damaged easily by free radicals. Free radicals will cause skin sagging to wrinkles. Pigmentation is also a sign of aging caused by the decrease in melanocytes which intern cause them to cluster together giving the appearance of brown spots. I gathered this information from this peer reviewed study that I recommend you read HERE.

Does The Skin Care Products You use Cause Estrogen DOMINANCE?
Estrogen Dominance is cause by excess estrogen, I'm only going to focus on the xenoestrogens. Xenoestrogens are fat-soluble and non-biodegradable, external sources received through the skin or digestion. The major sources of these Xenoestrogens are pesticides, detergents, petroleum products, plastic products, cosmetics, among others that do not relate to my post but you can read full article HERE.
Skin care products are only one small source that can cause Estrogen dominance and may not be the main source of these symptoms but do BE AWARE of your skin and hair care products because the amount of chemicals in commercially sold, facial cleanser, toner, moisturizers, anti aging creams, makeup and many others can be frightening. As a general rule, most sensitivity will be from man-made ingredients, not from naturally ingredients unless you have an allergy to that ingredient. If you wouldn't eat it why would you put in on your skin? I could literally eat all my Perfectly Posh Products although, they may not taste as yummy as they smell.
I did read an interesting point, when eating food your liver will detox most ingested ingredients and your body goes through many phases of protection such as digestion before it goes through your systemic circulation. Verses when putting products directly on the skin, your body absorbs the chemicals and it goes directly into the blood stream. Just some food for thought.

I could go on and on but I do not want this to be too lengthy, the moral to this blog is pay attention to your ingredients, avoid the listed chemicals below and choose naturally based products such s my favorite products, Perfectly Posh . Perfectly Posh is a naturally based company focused on using the best ingredients possible that are safe for the skin. So, next time you have a weird reaction after trying a skin care product consider the ingredients and ask yourself, could this be causing an increase in estrogen?
Chemicals To Avoid in Your Skin Care Products:
- Petroleum products (propylene glycol, mineral oil, baby oils, many fragrances, etc): These clog pores and encourage acne; may inflame skin. Lead to fine lines and wrinkles being more visible.
- Parabens (benzoic acids, butyl ester, methylparabe, ethyl ester, etc.):These are the xenoestrogens I’ve written about extensively. They mimic estrogen, contributing to estrogen dominance, or block estrogen receptors, which causes estrogen deficiency. They contribute to skin and breast cancer, low testosterone, and DNA damage.
- Formaldehyde (formalin, formic aldehyde, methyl aldehyde, etc.) and formaldehyde releasers (DMDM hydantoin, Dimethylol-5,5-dimethylhydantoin, etc.): These are basically very irritating, causing allergic reactions.
- Sulfates (sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate): These are strong cleansers. But for your skin and scalp, they are likely to be irritating and drying, which means more signs of aging.
- Alcohols (SD alcohol, ethanol, methanol, benzyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, etc.): These can be drying, depending on content in the product.
- Artificial colors and dyes: Anyone may have obvious or subtle sensitivity reactions to these.
- Ethanolamines (DEA, MEA, TEA): These cause allergic reactions, irritation to eyes, and drying of hair and skin.
- Phthalates (dibutyl phthalate, dioctyl 2,6-naphthalate, dibutyl 1,2-benzenedicarboxylate, etc.): This is a solvent found in nail products, blush and bath oils. It’s shown to cause birth defects in animals, and it damages male reproduction. In a 2002 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every participant tested positive for phthalates.
